hanami, still

The next President of the United States should be a lace knitter. I have been known to vote a party line ticket, but I'd seriously consider a crossover if one could manage lace knitting...

Hanami progress (unblocked and unfabulous)

I'm starting the last repeat of the basketweave pattern, after 3 solid non-start days of frogging, changing needles, generally wanting the stole to go to a quiet place in the bottom of Lake Merritt. It isn't that lace knitting is hard, it just takes so much more attention to detail than I'm used to in knitting. Also, its perfect (by its nature)... no fudging. *Everything* I've ever knit (excluding the sample German Stockings for Cookie, afaik anyway!) has some sort of mistake or fudge in it. The longer I do this, the less glaring the errors are, but truly and secretly there's something wrong with everything. (Don't go looking, its not a knitter's drinking game!) I just wasn't prepared for the rhythm of lace, and that I had to pay attention and stop daydreaming... its okay now. :)

During a little swearing and ripping session early on this week, mom came by and read the pattern description... "Hanami, the cherry blossom festival? Well, at least you have a whole year til it has to be done. Did I tell you that white is a great color on me?"

The Carrera/Silk & Ivory has a nice halo, though its merino/silk. I'm curious to how it will look blocked-- I'm knitting from an unscoured cone of yarn, so it may change and bloom in unexpected and hopefully good ways. Judging on how I had to hang it from my curtains to photograph it this morning, I'm also curious how I'll block this thing... it's estimated at 70" long as written, and mine will likely be longer as the yarn is a heavier gauge than the Knit Picks Alpaca Cloud. I have hardwood floors (no pinning to them), and a bed that's shorter than the stole will end up. Crossing that road when I get there...

Back to it, and just a fyi-- threadless reprinted the "insomnia" sheep shirt. :)

The stole is looking beautiful!
It is going to be crazy long! :oD

But I swear everything I have knitted too has some type of mistake in it, no matter how tiny it is! You know they just call it a designer element! :op

I am knitting my 1st lace pattern in white too, but it is a simple repeat. You must have some clean blinds b/c I would have never put my stark white lace on them!! Haha!

Loving it! It's going to be fantastic :)

I've had success using these interlocking foam floor mats for blocking. They're inexpensive and easy to store. Most of the big home centers carry them too.

Hanami is looking great! I have carpet in the rec room in the basement, so if I have anything long and big (usually just scarves) to block that's where I have to pin it. I have a hallway upstairs, and the bedrooms have carpet, but too many feet up here.

Thanks for the heads up on the T-shirt!

It's really stunning! Can't wait to see how it develops.

It's really gorgeous! I know what you mean about the concentration factor, though. I have to have a simple scarf or something to switch off with.

Excellent, just ordered my tee!! The challenge of blocking the stole will be interesting. Any relatives with large carpets?

Yup, you either pay attention, or you pay for it. Simple, eh? :-)

It's looking good, and I'm looking forward to the "falling blossom" part!

we used to walk the perimeter of lake merritt almost every day to lose our worries in its depths!

it looks beautiful! and i have to laugh at "virtuous" because i had the same thought about the clean blinds... i was so impressed that you couldn't see any dust!

Yay, I got the sleepy time sheep tshirt also. I was so mad at Threadless for sending me the wrong tshirt last time & then they were out of the ones I bought ... the fluffy hair sheep ... and I had to pick another. But it hasn't stopped me from buying again, LOL. BTW, I think our next President should be ANY kind of a Knitter, period. [doesn't mean it has to be a woman, tho] Right on!
