crochet chain roving braiding

the first time i bought chained roving i was !!! ... so much easier to pull open and start spinning than when its braided. i'm surrounded by a bunch of superwash rovings and barknknit asked how i was chaining them up-- a few pics of the steps (and a minipreview of the new dyeing idea i had to try out)...

take one end of the roving, lay the long end over the top of the short.

reach thru the loop, grab a length of the long end...

...pull thru...

P1060069

...making another loop.

P1060071

keep pulling the roving thru and making loops til you run out...

P1060084

...insert end into last loop...

P1060085

...pull taut and you're done!

yay!

this and nine other superwash merino rovings will be listed in my etsy shop tomorrow (may day!) at 9am (pacstandard). i'll have previews up in my flickr stream later-later today and can hold/reserve colors-- just send me a note.

  1. I prefer chained rovings myself. It is easier to see the color progression, easier to spin, easier to travel with and easier for me to do than braiding. But the only comment I ever got about chaining was from someone who said she hated the chained roving and wouldn't be buying it. Go figure.

I can't wait to see the rovings.

  2. Oy! It's later! Where are the pictures so I can drool and reserve too many for my wallet to be comfortably happy? :D

(My verification word is socklele. If i played the ukulele, that's what I'd name it.)

  6. Gorgeous colors. That purple is to *dye* for...and I don't gravitate towards purple!

  8. Thank you for posting this how-to. I prefer chained rovings to braided as well, and now I know how to do my own (once I start dyeing).

Also, your hand-dyed wool looks so beautiful, great job :)

  10. When I first started selling my hand dyed roving I would always crochet them like this, because it just made sense to me. Then I saw that all of the other roving sellers had braided theirs and decided that I must be doing it wrong. I know, so lame to follow the crowd instead of my instincts, but I thought that buyers preferred it braided. I still crochet chain all of the stuff that I keep for myself ;)

Your rovings were stunning, I drooled, then told myself that the hubby might just change the password on my Paypal account if I gave in.

  11. this technique also works great for camping ropes, then they dont get all tangled.

Rachel: maybe she didnt realize you need to pull the end out first and then work with it. ah well.

  12. I have been doing this for years on electrical cords. I think the reason some people hate it is that they try to pull it free from the wrong end and that is just a total mess.
